Military hero Sgt. Nathanie Rock, 26, from Toronto, Ohio, was an outstanding Marine.

"He was very proud to be a Marine,"said his mother.

His parents didn't support the Iraq war, but they were always behind their son, who expressed his love for the Marines at a young age: At 12 years old he used to eat military packaged meals that he got from his sister's Marine husband.

"It is some comfort to us that we know he was doing what he wanted, what he loved to do," said his father, Tim Rock.

Nathaniel was killed on August 1, 2005, by enemy small-arms fire whild conducting operations outside Haditha, Iraq.

Congressman Ted Strickland released the following statement concerning Nathaniel’s death:

"Young men like Sergeant Nathaniel Rock who answer the call to military service and willingly put their lives on the line deserve all the thanks and respect our nation can muster. Sergeant Rock’s bravery and sense of duty serve as an example to all of us.

"It is tragic to lose someone so young and so filled with promise. My heart goes out to his family and to his friends. I know that he will be missed by his hometown of Toronto, and the community of Martins Ferry in which he served as a Police Officer. We will always honor his memory."

Toronto High School in 1997 and served in the Marines for six years and then joined the reserves.

He was also a part-time police officer in Martins Ferry, serving alongside his brother, Jared.

And he was highly adept with his work in law enforcement.

"Nathaniel displayed integrity and curiosity that would have suited him well in the profession,"said Barry Carpenter, police chief in Martins Ferry.

"I always saved a spot for him," said Carpenter. "He was a talented, proud officer with great potential.”

Nathaniel was a handsome, caring, intelligent, compassionate, and dedicated Marine.
